Artist's Description
A view of the Old Burying Ground in the Historic District of the sea port town of Beaufort, North Carolina. It is a bit startling to read the headstones and see how young many of the occupants are. For example, the nearest headstone in this image marks the grave of a young woman aged 7 years. In this centuries old graveyard the resting place of patriots, privateers, soilders, mariners and towns people can be found. The oldest section of the cemetary is believed to hold the remains of victims of an Indian massacre. Grave sites of soilders from both the Revolutionary and Cibil wars can be seen here.
The Old Burying Ground can be found along Ann Street. Three churches sit adjacent to the old graveyard: Purvis Chapel AME Church, Ann St. Methodist Church and the First Babtist Church.
About Bob Decker
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
