Description
Fort Macon is a Civil War era fortress located on Bogue Banks, a barrier island along along the North Carolina coast. Construction began on the brick and earth structure in 1826. It was built as a replacement for Fort Hampton which was located 300 yards east of the current structure. The facility is surrounded by water on three sides, Beaufort Inlet, the Atlantic Ocean and Bogue Sound.
Confederate soldiers captured the fort early in the Civil War. However, Union forces recaptured it in 1862. The fort was garrisoned three times; during the Civil War, the Spanish-American war and Word War II. Today it is the central attraction of the 424 acre state park that bears its name.
The park borders the beah commuity of Atlanic Beach and is a short drive from other Crystal Coast towns such as Morehead City, Beaufort and Emerald Isle. In addition to the fort the park features a visitors center that includes a museum, lovely undeveloped beaches and a 3 plus mile nature trail. Activities include fishing, hiking, historic reenactment beach combing and swimming. This park is most definitely one of the crown jewels of the Crystal Coast..
