Description
Once the highest capacity pump in the world, it was converted into a hunting lodge in the 1930s. The stack which served the steam engines that powered the water moving machinery was converted into a lighthouse like observation tower complete with a sprral staircase leading to the top. Often referred to as the lighthouse of Lake Mattamuskeet, the property is on the National Historical Register. Today the property is owned by the state of North Carolina and there has been a stalled effort to restore the facility into a lodge.
