This lovely old Live Oak tree can be seen a few yards off of the Hoop Pole Creek Nature walk. This half-mile trail is found adjacent to the Atlantic Station shopping center along NC Highway 58 in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. The trail-head is found across from a Bojangles restaurant and begins with a boardwalk. After a short walk. the path takes a right hand turn onto a paved walkway. The pavement terminates at a sand pathway and views for a scenic wetlands area.
This is one of several broad leaf, evergreen trees hidden along this one mile round trip hike. A short side trail terminates at the base of one large oak. Another has a large branch that reaches out to the trail. Most, like the one pictured, sit well off the trail and are protected by thick brush and brambles.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
