A Greater Scaup (Aythya marila) floats on a calm Lake Mattmuskeet in northeastern North Carolina. This body of water is the largest natural like in North Carolina. With a shallow depth which averages 2 to 3 feet deep, the lake is 18 miles long and 7 miles wide. Much of the land surrounding the lake is a National Wildlife Refuge and is the winter home to a large number of waterfowl species.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
