Description
A Great Blue Heron stands in a small stream in the Croatan National Forest. When I first noticed this large wading bird he was feeding in the calm, slow moving waters of this creek. After realizing I was watching the bird stood at attention to determine if I posed a threat.Just as the bird started to relax someone came past on a small dirt bike, startling and putting the heron to wing.
The GBH is the largest Heron found in the United States. As an adult they can more than 3 feet tall and weigh in excess of 5 pounds. Their wingspan is nearly 6 1/2 feet.
Sometimes mistaken for cranes, these big birds can be found in both freshwater and saltwater habitats. They can be found in wetlands, rivers, swamps and shores. A common sight along coastal Carolina, these creatures are quite shy and can be difficult to approach and photograph.
