A pair of young Red Foxes enjoy the warm sun outside of their den. Living on an island along the Southern Outer Banks of North Carolina, the den is located at the base of a sand dune, Red foxes, Vulpes vulpes, are the largest of the true foxes. These lovely animals feed on small mammals, birds and reptiles, as well as fruit and vegetables when available.
This color photograph was made on one of the islands that lies within the boundaries of the Rachel Carson Estuarine Reserve across Taylor's Creek from Beaufort, North Carolina. Other mammals found on these small barrier islands include raccoons and wild horses. Black bears have been known to visit the reserve.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
