The Elliot Coues trail as it leaves the front of the Fort's parking lont and leads towards the beach. 3.2 miles in length, it is popular with bikers, dog walkers, hikers and nature lovers. The moderately easy course passes over sand dunes, past wetlands and through maritime forest on its return to the parking area. Visitors will find benches and short spur trails that lead to overlooks of the ocean and marsh. Wooden bridges lead across creeks and ponds.
Fort Macon State Park is located in the seaside community of Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. Located at the eastern tip of Bogue Banks islnad, aka the Crystal Coast, its beaches are bordered by the Beaufort Inlet and Atlantic ocean. The park features a visitors center, and a Civil War era fort, as well as its lovely beaches and trails. With so much to offer it is little wonder that it is one of the state's most popular outdoors recreation spots.

When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
