An arched doorway allows a beam of light to fall upon the old wooden floor in this historic Civil War era fort. This color photograph was made in one of the twenty-one casements, or vaulted rooms found inside Fort Macon State Park near Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. This ancient structure has the honor of being the first state park in NC.
Third Place in the "Mysterious Masonry" contest, May 28, 2021.
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
