Description
Storm surge has taken away the shoreline along Lola Road on Cedar Island, North Carolina. The deep cutback is now starting to threaten the adjacent roadway. Saltwater incursion has killed several trees, most that have disappeared into the sound.
Shorelines are a dynamic environment. They expand and shrink as nature's fury and processes take their toll. Sometimes humans intervene by building jetties, seawalls or through sand restoration efforts. In other cases natural cycles are allowed to function.
Cedar Island is located at the eastern end of Carteret County, also known as the Crystal Coast. This small fishing village is home to a NC Ferry Service terminal that transports passengers and vehicles to Okracoke Island, the gateway to the Outer Banks.

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
