Artist's Description
The bloom of a young dogwood tree, located in the Croatan National Forest along the Neusiok Trail, is centered in this photo surrounded by dark green leaves. The state flower of North Carolina, these trees with their lovely white blooms are quite striking when seen in the forest and in well manicured yards as landscape features. The hard, shock resistant wood of these beautiful trees was once used as shovel and axe handles as well as for the manufacture of farm implements. Legend has it that wood from the Dogwood was used to make the cross upon which Jesus was crucified. Having been horrified at its use, the tree that was once large, straight and tall became twisted and thin so as to never be used in that way again.
About Bob Decker
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
