Artist's Description
A dead Bald Cypress tree stands along the bank of the Neuse River in the Croatan National Forest. At the top of the tree is a large Osprey nest. In the distance a tree line juts out into the river from the left hand side. Dark, stormy clouds loom above.
This black and white photo was made on a cool February day. I had been wanting to visit and photograph along this area of the river for a while, but the Pine Cliffs recreation area has been closed since hurricane Florence wreaked havoc on eastern North Carolina. The National Forest Service has announced it could be another two year before the necessary repairs are made to the popular area. As such, I needed to find an alternate route to the river. One of the many horseback riding trails provided the passage I needed. I'm also aware of a gated fire access road that leads to the Neuse. I hope to explore that route in the near future.

About Bob Decker
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
