Description
The Common Day Lily or Ditch Lily, Hemerocallis fulva, was first intorduced to North America in the 19th century as an ornimental plant. Native to Asia, it is a popular decorative plant. But it also has the ability to spread beyond the homestead flowerbed. The flower pictured here was photography in a ditch along a Croatan National Forest access road in Eastern North Carolina. While a beautiful flower with its bright orange bloom, it can have a devastating effect on native species. In the wild this invasive plant multiplies quickly, forming dense patches that displace native plants. The Common Day Lily can be found in every eastern US state.
