Description
Cedar Island North Carolina ia a bit of an oddity in that it is home not only to a herd of wild horses, but also a herd of feral cows. No one knows how the cows came to be on the island but it's likely they were once part of a domestic herd that may have been located here or on a nearby island.
In 2019 Hurricane Dorian slammed into the Crystal Coast of North Carolina. A mini-tsunami flooded Cedar Island with about eight feet of water. The flood washed several of the isands wild horses and feral cows out to sea. Presumed dead, three of the cows turned up on a deserted island in the area of Cape Lookout, four miles offshore from Cedar Island. By some miracle the cows had managed to swim ashore on the barrier island that is part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore. Subsequently the cows were captured and returned to their home on Cedar Island.
While walking the beach at Cedar Island I was lucky enough to come across this lone "sea cow." Further up the beach, maybe a mile and a half or so, I could see more of the herd. However, in the heat and humidity I didn't want to push my walk out near twice my distance from the parking lot.
