This lovely Barred Owl, Strix varia, was perched along the Spanish Moss Trail in Cliffs fo the Neuse State Park, Seven Spings North Carolina. Generally preferring to live and hunt in wooded swamp and river bottom areas, as well as mixed woodlands, these birds are only slightly smaller than the great Horned Owl.
Covering a bit more than 1000 acres of land in Wayne County, NC, the park sits along the southern banks of the Neuse River. Park amenities include hiking, camping, fishing and swimming.

When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
