The Pine Cliff Recreation area was one of my favorite locations for photography in the Croatan National Forest. Setting along the Neuse River in eastern North Carolina, one of the trailheads for the Neusiok trail is located here. The site took substantial damage during hurricane Florence and has been closed ever since. The National Park Service has recently state that it could be another two years before the area is reopened. This photo was taken a few years ago at this lovely spot.
In this color photograph a tall, bald cypress tree is silhouetted against a colorful sky painted by the setting sun. Hues of orange, blue and violet dominate the scene. The Neuse river provides an obvious horizon in the background.

When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
