A small, wooden dingy is depicted in a coastal scene along the Outer Banks of North Carolina near the Down East community of Harkers Island.
In this moody black and white photograph a storm can be seen approaching from the south, threatening the hand crafted wooden boat. The angry clouds create a mood of potential doom for the little dingy. In the distance the shoreline of Shackleford Banks, one of the barrier islands of the outer banks, can be seen.
Scenes like this were once common along our coastal NC villages. Local boat builders constructed small boats like this in order to tend their crab traps and nets. The craftsmanship used to construct such timeless wooden vessels are quickly becoming lost arts. This was simply an image that had to be made.

I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
