During a recent visit to the gardens at Tryon Palace in New Bern North Carolina I made this photograph of one of the statues. I purposely left plenty of negative space showing the brick palace wall and some of the well manicured shrubs. When I showed the image to the lady friend that accompanied me on that visit I mentioned that the empty space would be perfect for some ad copy, editorial text or, perhaps, a poem. She suggested "A Solemn Thing - it was - I said" by Emily Dickinson. I thought it was a good idea and produced this end work.
A solemn thing — it was — I said —
A woman — white — to be —
And wear — if God should count me fit —
Her blameless mystery —
A hallowed thing — to drop a life
Into the purple well —
Too plummetless — that it return —
Eternity — until —
I pondered how the bliss would look —
And would it feel as big —
When I could take it in my hand —
As hovering — seen — through fo...
I've always been a bit of an adventurer as well as being fascinated by the art and craft of photography. As a boy my folk hero was Daniel Boone. When on family camping trips I'd often go hiking where I'd allow my young imagination to run crazy with images of being an early colonial explorer blazing the way into the unknown wilderness. As an adult my activities have included hiking, kayaking, spelunking, wreck and cave diving and other adventurous outdoor experiences. I always feel drawn to see what lies down that old dirt road, hides behind the next hill, or awaits further down the river. It's been said I suffer severely from the Star Trek syndrome: "To boldly go..." My photography is simply an extension of my thirst for knowledge, desire...
