Description
Fire access roads provide access deep into the pine forests of eastern North Carolina. Miles of these roads can take one deep inside thie long leaf pine woodlands, where the narrow dirt and gravel paths are the only hint of civilization. Much of the southern portions of the Unitied States looked like this with European Explorers first smashed onto the shores of North America. Native Amrecians had long lived in harmony with the wilderness. The pine savannas and barrens teamed with wildlife such as Whitetail Deer and Black Bear. Primal and wild there was a beauty that has disappeared from much of the nation.
Thie black and white photograph was create while exploring NC Gamelans in Craven county. While only a short drive from the city of New Bern, it has the feel of being deep inside a wilderness, far from the stress and clutter of modern life. It is places like this to which I like to escape and attempt to capture the essence of these environments with my camera. While possibly an impossible quest, it is the one I choose to pursue.

In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
